Your Seattle Mariners have some big changes planned for next season. They’ve already announced they’re moving the outfield fences in, recognizing that they’ve been last in the major leagues in run support for a sometimes pretty decent pitching staff, but opposing batters aim for those fences too. GM Jack Zduriencik is trying to extend Ace pitcher Felix Hernandez’s contract (he’s here for the next two years and has said he wants to stay, but after that he’d presumably be snapped up by the Yankees), and says they’re going to be in the hunt for a big bat when free-agency begins right after the World Series. “We’re going to be open to doing whatever we can to improve the club”, he said. But in most cases that takes money, and lots of it.

And guess who gets to pay for it all? You do. The M’s have raised season-tickets prices by varying amounts, depending on seat location…a few less-desirable-obstructed-view-nosebleed-section seats have actually gone down by a miniscule amount, but overall the increases are significant, and what’s irked longtime season ticket buyers is that the Mariners didn’t tell them about it…they’re sort of hoping no one will notice.

The Mariners are currently 18th in Major League Baseball in salary expenditures, and third in the AL West. But they still suck, coming off their third season at the ass-end of the AL West, and the team with the second lowest payroll in baseball, the Oakland A’s, won the division. They’ll have competition for the cellar next season when the dismal Houston Astros join the division, but attendance has been declining steadily with the team’s performance for some time now. Wouldn’t lowering prices bring more people to the ballpark, and in turn more cash? Shouldn’t we be doing better than last place before they start asking for more money?
