Ben Folds Five Reunite For First Album In 13 Years

Ben Folds Five have reunited and are already working on their first new album in 13 years. Wednesday night Folds tweeted a photo of himself with bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee. The photo was posted with this revealing statement: “It’s happening fo sho – Day 1 in studio with Robert and Darren through March #NewBenFoldsFiveRecord.”

Ben Folds and his South Carolina based band haven’t performed together since 2008. SPIN says, “the three members of Ben Folds Five (yes, we know) reunited onstage for the first time in almost a decade to perform their third and final album, 1999′s widely underrated The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.”

Ben Folds Five recently reunited to record three new tracks for Ben Folds’ compilation The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective, released last October. Besides the in studio “through March” hint in the original tweet, Folds responded to a question tweeting “Spring release.” Until then enjoy these classic Ben Folds Five cuts:

Robert Hegyes Who Played Welcome Back Kotter’s Epstein Dead At Age 60

Welcome Back Kotter fans are mourning the loss of Robert Hegyes who played Epstein on the show in the 1970′s. Hegyes died of a heart attack at the age of 60 Thursday after suffering chest pains at his home in Metuchen, New Jersey. Hegyes was also a regular on Cagney & Lacey and was a guest star on shows including Saturday Night Live, Diagnosis Murder and The Drew Carey Show.

Hegyes brother Mark told U.K’s Daily Mail, “the American TV star, who starred alongside John Travolta in the classic 70s sitcom, was not in good health after suffering a heart attack a couple of years ago.” Hegyes’ performance as one of the tough remedial students known as the Sweathogs at the fictional James Buchanan High in Brooklyn helped Welcome Back Kotter win an Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series in 1976. He also took on the mantle of director for several episodes.

Hegyes, who portrayed Kotter’s Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein, later played to rave reviews on Broadway as Chico Marx in An Evening With Groucho Marx. There was even talk a few years ago of reviving the Epstein character for a new sitcom, but that didn’t pan out. Here’s a look at some favorite Epstein moments:

A nugget of fun comes our way from Van Halen’s new album, “A Different Kind Of Truth”.

It’s less than 2 weeks until the forthcoming album from Van Halen is released, so today the 90 second preview is called “Blood And Fire”. You may notice that some of the licks in the song sound vaguely familiar. The albums first release “Tattoo” was based on the unreleased song “Down In Flames”, and “She’s The Woman” was originally recorded as a demo in 1976.

According to RollingStone.com, many groups use old material as inspiration or even the basis for new material.

Rock Flashback: New Riders of the Purple Sage

If the Grateful Dead were a tree, its offshoots would be many. One that’s occasionally overlooked is New Riders of the Purple Sage.

The New Riders originally featured Dead members Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart. The group was intended as an outlet for the trio’s interest in country rock. The other members in the band’s original lineup, David Nelson and John Dawson, were old San Francisco friends of the Dead.

Dawson and Nelson would remain constants in the band for years to come; the lineup around them would shift quite a bit, although drummer Spencer Dryden, formerly of the Jefferson Airplane, was a member for 10 years.

The New Riders’ first album was released in 1971. The band frequently opened for the Dead, and in December 1971, played a live radio concert with the Dead broadcast over WNEW-FM. But it is the New Riders’ third album for which they are best known. Although their second album, Powerglide, charted higher, The Adventures of Panama Red was their best seller — and if you know a single New Riders song, it’s probably “Panama Red.”

We heard “Glendale Train” from the band’s debut album on the radio the other day — the only NRPS album to feature Jerry Garcia in a starring role — and we like it.

New Neil Young And Crazy Horse Album Recorded With Second Album Already Started

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will put out a new album sometime this spring. Young dropped that bombshell at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The Godfather of Grunge revealed the first album has been recorded he and the band are already working on a second offering. Neil Young fansite Thrashers Wheat and Rolling Stone both now confirm the news. “It’s looking good,” a representative for Young says. According to the fansite report, Young shared the news during a Slamdance event with Jonathan Demme promoting their new movie Journeys. The audience “erupted in applause” when Young said that he was working with Crazy Horse again. Multiple fans quicky posted on Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina‘s Facebook wall asking if it was true. His response: “Yes!”

Neil also revealed he has been writing songs recently and is happy with his results. He noted a 4th film with Demme would make the effort a “4 wheel drive not a 3 wheel drive.” Even after rumors of a tour earlier this year, there was “no mention of Buffalo Springfield.” The new Neil Young and Crazy Horse album will be the first since 2003′s Greendale. Crazy Horse and Young have always had a pretty open band relationship. Young moved from Crazy Horse to Crosby, Still, Nash & Young, to solo and back again and Young’s Crazy Horse albums have come at random over the last 43 years.
