Recently, the music world found out that Tom Petty will receive songwriter credit on Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” after Petty’s team noticed similarities with his hit “I Won’t Back Down.” Now Petty has released a statement making clear that he knows it was just a “musical accident,” and “the word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention.”

The statement acknowledges that similar sounding melodies are common in music.

“Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by,” he added. “Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement.”

Previously, Smith’s representatives explained the situation to Billboard: “Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers of ‘Stay With Me’ along with Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips.”
