Blow out the candles, Rivers Cuomo, your band’s debut album is 20 years old. And it is safe to say two decades and more than 3 million copies later, Weezer‘s first collection of studio recordings Weezer (aka the Blue Album) is matchless.

Was “emo” born with this classic? Probably not born. But the crop of current bands who deem themselves as “emotional” rock bands more than likely got their chops by looping the Blue album for hours at a time.

The record was released on May 10, 1994 on DGC Records and produced by The CarsRic Ocasek. “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So” were the three singles to come out of the album.

“Say It Ain’t So” deals with an incident in which Cuomo came home to a bottle of beer in his fridge and he took it as a sign that his mother and step-father’s marriage was about to come to an end. The relationship between Cuomo’s biological father and mother ended the same way. Although the tune wasn’t as successful as the first two singles, it is considered Weezer’s most popular song to date and is considered the band’s signature song by many.
