Colbert Once Denied By Letterman [Video]

Weird breaking news from last week: Stephen Colbert will take over David Letterman’s “Late Show” next year. Last night on Letterman, Colbert told the story about trying to get a writing gig with Dave, many, many years ago, but was denied. He even wrote up a Top Ten list as part of his audition process, and even that didn’t work. But last night, Colbert finally saw his “Top Ten Cocktails for Santa,” come to fruition.

Colbert added that he was offered a “Late Show” internship in the ’80s, but turned it down. He said the lack of pay was a problem, and then tried unsuccessfully to confirm that his new gig will come with a paycheck.

After 21 years at the helm, Letterman announced his plans to retire at the end of 2014.
