Tissues V. Hankies (The Great Debate)

Got a cold? A runny nose? Go green by sporting an old fashioned cotton handkerchief. Did you know that it takes 20 cups of water to make one nose tissue? In addition to this water waste, all of these gross little used pieces of paper clog up the landfill. Not so with a dapper, folded nose hanky.

When considering which snot containing method to choose, we must consider three factors: Waste, Water Usage, and Energy consumption. In all three categories, the cloth hanky wins. And then, if you take it a few steps further, and buy used or organic cotton or even hemp hankies, the you should get a medal.

This science is true only if you actually use the cloth hanky, and refuse to blow in paper products. This article from a bunch of treehuggers in Australia breaks down the reasoning behind a cloth hanky even further.
