CareerBuilder Survey: Seattle Workers Don’t Have Potty Mouths

When it comes to expressing physical pain, stress or sheer anger, Americans know how to let loose; Four-letter words seem to do the trick more often than not. However, when it comes to swearing at the office, some cities do better at holding back.

A new survey from has some interesting stats for us.

-64% of employers said that they’d think less of an employee who repeatedly uses curse words.

-57% said they’d be less likely to promote someone who swears in the office.

Half of the workers involved in the survey admitted to swearing while on the job. 95% of those say it happens in front of co-workers, 51% say it happens in front of the boss.

So where are these potty-mouthed suits working? Apparently not in the Northwest (coffee and beer). Among the top markets in the U.S., Washington D.C. is not only the home of the nation’s capitol, it’s the capital of cussing. 62% of workers in D.C. swear at work. Denver finished second with 60%. More than half of workers in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago cuss in the office as well.

Why do you think Seattle wasn’t in the top 10? Don’t you ever look outside your office window right before you have to drive home and shout, “F***!”
