Steven Tyler and J-Lo Selected To Judge American Idol

You can finally give the edge of your seat a rest, Fox just confirmed [lastfm]Steven Tyler[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Jennifer Lopez[/lastfm] as the new “American Idol” judges. Over the past year, there has been much speculation about who will replace Simon Cowell and company (which has been arguably more exciting than the show itself). According to the stats below, if the two newbies had their own competition, then Tyler would be America’s idol.

After decades of singing (and screaming) with Aerosmith, he certainly knows how to please the masses. But the reality is (pun intended) that more eyes will be on the much-loved/hated Simon Cowell and his U.S. version of “The X Factor.” We’ll just have to wait until January to see if he can deliver the goods with some constructive criticism.

[lastfm]Jennifer Lopez[/lastfm]
10,015,904 plays (891,374 listeners)
As an actress and pop star, J-Lo can now add “Idol” judge to her ridiculous resume. She’ll fill the high heels of [lastfm]Paula Abdul[/lastfm] and Kara DioGuardi as the experienced diva of the group. With her good girl persona, we probably won’t see Lopez acting drunk or slurring her words. Hopefully she’ll bring some clarity to the panel.

Remember these rumors for replacing Simon?

[lastfm]Elton John[/lastfm]
20,307,118 plays (1,356,668 listeners)
Captain Fantastic would’ve been… fantastic! Elton was the immediate people’s choice after Cowell made his announcement, however the buzz faded. As a guest judge on season three, he proved he can be just as bitchy as Cowell. The reality is that he’s too big for even ‘Idol,’ so his appearance could damage his integrity as a music legend.

[lastfm]Howard Stern[/lastfm]
194,972 plays (8,952 listeners)
Last year, Howard Stern told his satellite radio listeners that he’d “judge a karaoke contest” for 100 million and is considering leaving Sirius to become a judge on “Idol.” As the quintessential shock jock, Stern would’ve been an amazing addition to the judging panel–he may be the only person that matched Cowell, when it comes to speaking his mind. He may have been even too crass for Fox (if that’s possible).

We never heard from the queen of pop herself, but she was in the running (that is, if you believe the blogosphere). She’s qualified for the position and would get high ratings, but she’s not exactly known for having a witty personality.

[lastfm]Steve Lillywhite[/lastfm]
Grammy Award-winning record producer went as far as sending a video to the “Idol” producers asking to replace Simon. If they were looking for music credentials, Lillywhite was the most practical candidate with 30 years of experience as the producer for [lastfm]U2[/lastfm], [lastfm]The Rolling Stones[/lastfm], [lastfm]Phish[/lastfm], [lastfm]Morrissey[/lastfm] and more. And his British-ness would’ve made for a logical swap, but ran the risk of being the poor man’s Cowell (relatively speaking).

The 10th season of “Idol” returns in January. Read more on
